Give Me A Vowel

...and this gem from an Associated Press story: Tom Delay is a "lightening rod".

One thing is for certain. The state of language in journalism today is "frightning", with no indication of "brightning" on the immediate horizon.

I don't get it. That article was quoting Dennis Hastert's defense of DeLay. What's the big deal?

the writer mis-spelled "lightning" by adding an "e" in the middle. That's the point of the post.

I do see spelling errors all the time in copy from professional sources. I wouldn't say that's the worst failing of the modern media by any means but it is still depressing.
